Ginger writes,

"Every year my husband and I travel to the Adirondacks for our wedding anniversary at the end of September and I wanted something to do while relaxing at our rustic campsite. I make bobbin lace, but that is not the easiest to do while camping and the lighting needed for that is not good in the lean-to. So I decided 2 days before leaving to start a rag rug with fabric I had in the attic from my aunt. I was able to work on it in the car and got a great start on it. While camping and on the ride home I completed a good 10 inch circle. Wow did it looks nice and smelled just like the campfire. During October I added on to it to bring it to 16 inch circle. By the end of 2008 I have completed a 27 inch circle! I love it so far and going to keep on going. So I hope to make it big enough for in front of our fireplace in the dining room."

Shaunna T. writes,

"I've been trying to find the right thing to solve the cold floor problem in my sons' play room for the longest time. I used simple crocheting logic (an extra stitch at each turning point) to go back and forth in the center to make it a square, since the space I need to fill is square.  I'm also adding three extra stitches in each corner as it gets larger to accomodate the size. Thanks so much again for the how to instructions."

Shelly from Cheyenne, WY writes,

"I finished this rug late last night. My strips were a bit bigger (about 4" wide) than what you show in your videos but it still worked out.  I used old sheets that I received off of the local freecycle group here in Cheyenne. There were the bright blue plaid sheets which I wished after ward that I hadn't used because it just wasn't the same color hue, a pair of dark maroon and dark blue plaid sheets and then solid dark blue sheets and a light tan small checkered sheets. All were twin sized flat sheets and when I ran out of rags, the rag was finished by stitching the ends inside the rug. It was wavy in a few spots so I laid it down flat, laid a damp towel on top of it and blocked it by ironing the towel. It lays completely flat now. It measures about 3 feet long. It's not perfect but it works great for the front door and my husband likes the colors a lot more than the one I made from old pink sheets."

Rhonda writes, "Thank you so much for the tutorial video! It's so much easier for me when I can SEE it. You did a great job! I've included a link for you to see my first rug. It didn't come out perfect but I learn more as I make them. I've already started another one and thinking of the next as I'm working! The possibilities are endless! And again, Thank you!!"

Michael Anne writes, "I have been having a BLAST thanks to you. My sister saw something in a magazine about toothbrush rugs and told me about them. Soooo, doing what I do best, I researched them on the web and found you guys and the rug goth as well. Your instructional video is the best that I have found. Sooo off I went to see what I could do, because truthfully, I really didn't think it would be as easy as it seemed. WOW was I ever shocked. Easy, and fun. I did run into the problem of it trying to "bowl" on me but simply corrected by adding a stitch or two and lessening up on my tension, found out snug was better than tight. I am sending pics of the first one that is on my kitchen floor in front of the sink. It has already been abused by everyone who walks past and the dogs think I made it for them and it is holding up beautifully. Just used some cotton fabric I already had with intentions of quilting. This is better, can take with me everywhere, can't quilt everywhere. And you can see the finished product and have it in use in a day, depending on size of course. Anyway, THANK YOU, and Happy Rugging."Micheal Anne's Rug in the KitchenMicheal Anne's Rug in the Kitchen

Crocheted heart shaped

Crocheted heart shaped Potholder maybe the same can be used for a rug

This pattern first appeared in our catalog in 1985. The potholder is 9” X 7” overall with its own hanger. You will need 7/8 yard of 45” wide cotton fabric, cut into strips 3/4” wide. Sew the ends together with a bias joint to make a continuous length.

Use size J or K crochet hook.
Make a slip knot and chain 13.
Begin at second chain from hook. SC5, skip next chain, SC5, 4SC into slip knot, SC5, 2SC in next space, SC5, 4SC in last Chain.
Base: SC4, skip 1, SC5, 2SC in each of next 4 spaces, SC5, 2SCin each of next 2 spaces, SC5, 2SC in each of next 4 spaces, SC5
Round 1: SC4, Skip 1, SC5. *For the next seven spaces insert the following in order: 2SC, 1SC, 2SC, 1SC, 2SC, 1SC, 2SC.* SC6, 2SC in each of next 2 spaces, SC 7. Repeat the sequence of seven*
Round 2: SC4, skip 1, SC 5. *For next 10 stitches alternate 2SC, then 1SC, 1SC*. SC7, 2SC in each of next 2 spaces, SC9. Repeat the sequence of 10*
Round 3: SC4, Skip 1, SC5. *For next 13 stitches alternate 2SC, then 1SC, 1SC, 1SC.* SC8, 2SC in each of next 2 spaces, SC11. Repeat the sequence of 13*
Round 4: SC4, skip 1, SC29, 2SC, SC32, Slip 1, skip 1, slip 10.
Hanger: Chain 10, Slip 2, end off and lace end of strip back into work. Sew strip end in place.

VARIATIONS ON THE CROCHETED POTHOLDER..
Hotpad: Lately we've received several inquiries from folks wondering if this pattern will work with our "standard fabric strip" (1-1/2 inches wide). The answer is yes, it will! With the wider strip the potholder will become a heavier "hotpad"--like a miniature rug-- and will be larger also. Use a size L or N hook, and allow 1-1/4 yards of 45" fabric (about 35 yards of strip). Then just follow the pattern above.
Basket: With the 1-1/2 inch fabric strip, this pattern can also be used to create a heart shaped rag basket. Follow the above pattern though round 4. Then just single crochet around and around the heart (one stitch in each space) to make the sides of the basket. Allow about 1-3/4 yards of 45" fabric (about 50 yards of strip).

Hello all, I found a neat

Hello all,

I found a neat tool I use for the Toothbrush Rugs. It's called a BODKIN. I bought it at Jo-ann's for less than $2, and it is usually used to insert elastic into hems. It works fantastic for the rugs, because it is very narrow and keeps the loops tight without having to pull much. It works similar to a tweezer with a ring attached around it, to trap the fabric strips, and makes quick work of the rug. Just remember to cut the slit into the fabric strips on each end so the tool can be inserted.
Have fun,
Petra

If you know how big you want

If you know how big you want your finished rug, you take the finished length and subtract the finished width and the answer is how long to make the starting row. For example: If you want you rug to be 24" X 18",

24"-18"=6" so your starting row should be 6" long. This formula works for any size rug you want to make.

I'm not Shaunna, but I have

I'm not Shaunna, but I have an idea on how she may have made that square rug. I'm just starting with rag rugs, but I have been crocheting for a long time.

To make the square rug (or rectangular if you wanted), you would first have to start with a chain, you know just a long straight line of knots, then instead of going around as in a circular fashion, you would move back & forth on the same side.

When your initial chain is the length you want, you would start by making your next 2 knots in the hole you just made and move in a straight line to the other end. Once you get to the other end, you will once again start to make your way back on the same side you've been stitching on. Again, make your next 2 knots in the hole you just made and move in a straight line to the other end. Continue moving back and forth like this until you get a square.

Once you have the initial square, you will then begin to move in the "circular" fashion around the edges of the square remembering to add 3 or 4 knots in each corner to keep it square and flat. You will continue this way until you are done.

Again, I'm not Shaunna, but this is what I would do.

Hope this helps.
